About Us

Paul F. Martin

My training in the Martial Arts began in 1989 under Master Chung Chul Rhee, upon moving to Arizona my training continued under Master David Karstadt.

I opened my first school in 1995 in Phoenix, Arizona. I had the honor of being one of the coaches for the US Men's Team preparing for the 2002 World Championships. My ongoing training is overseen by Master David Karstadt, 7th Degree Black Belt of Arizona Kicks Taekwon-Do.  As Chief Instructor, I oversee all aspects of my Assistant Instructor's and student's training. We operate on a cyclical curriculum to ensure all aspects of the Art are covered. All classes are high energy, exciting and designed to give a sense of achievement.  All Black Belt holders are expected to be approachable, willing to demonstrate and assist where necessary.

Discipline in the Martial Arts dates back to ancient traditions. Because Taekwon-Do is such a potentially dangerous physical activity, rules, regulations and regimentation must be strictly adhered to and followed. In Taekwon-Do, as in the military, rank holds it's privileges. It also demands responsibility from the belt holder. Great respect is due the instructor and senior students at all times. All senior students must hold a commitment to teaching junior students.

 FAQ's

What benefit can I expect from Taekwon-Do?

Through a regular commitment to your training you will develop strength, coordination and flexibility, improve your ability to effectively deal with stress, increase your energy, and learn practical self-defense techniques.

Do I have to be in good physical condition to learn Taekwon-Do?

Many people believe that you have to be fit to learn Taekwon-Do. However, this is not true. All you need is the desired to learn and the desire to be the best you can be, mentally and physically.  Many people who start Taekwon-Do are out of shape, but after a few months they notice a significant increase in strength, stamina, flexibility and coordination.

How often do I need to attend training?

Attendance must be regular, a minimum of two classes per week. Given that class sizes are limited, it may not be possible to make up for missed classes, therefore some additional training on an individual basis may be necessary. It is an act of courtesy to inform your instructor if you are going to miss class.

How do I advance in the belts?

As you progress in your training, a demonstration of your skills and knowledge is required. There are 10 levels or grades to achieving a Black Belt. Time requirements at each grade level varies, your ability to assimilate knowledge and learn specific techniques is one of the deciding factors.

FAQ's

Do I have to sign a contract or agreement?

No. Monthly fees apply.

What age limitations are there?

While we all believe our children to be exceptional and advanced in maturity, each child must be interviewed to assess their ability to follow direction, to listen, to respond accord to direction and to assess their attention span. Training involves kicking and punching, rapid movement and turning, for safety reasons, a child must be capable of remaining within their allotted space. An out of control child is a danger to themselves and others. A general rule of thumb is commencement at 4 years of age, there is no upper age limit.

Don't you just teach people to fight?

No. Taekwon-Do is primarily a self defense art; the level of commitment and discipline involved quickly weeds out those who may have begun training for the wrong reasons. While sparring is part of the training cycle, self control, courtesy and an overriding sense of self discipline is demanded. Training develops self confidence, helps to reduce fear and allows the student to handle stress in a more appropriate manner than simply lashing out.
